Check version to make sure:

$ nc 172.30.10.20 6379
INFO SERVER

(or just:  $ redis-cli -h 172.30.10.20 info )


>> (!)save_info_final failed, Redis error: Can't connect to a redis
>> server db_id 1 server 172.30.10.20:6379:
>> ERR Syntax error, try CLIENT (LIST | KILL ip:port)


If I send it an invalid CLIENT command:

CLIENT foo

it responds:

-ERR Syntax error, try CLIENT (LIST | KILL ip:port | GETNAME | SETNAME 
connection-name)

... unlike your error message, which does not show SETNAME as a valid
command's argument.
