Eventually, after a couple of hours running in the foreground, amavisd sent
the following to the log:

Aug 11 10:56:14.510 mustang.sdc.com.au /sbin/amavisd[5141]: (05141-20)
Requesting process rundown after 20 tasks (and 20 sessions)
Aug 11 10:56:14.512 mustang.sdc.com.au /sbin/amavisd[5141]: (05141-20) exiting
process_request
Aug 11 10:56:14.512 mustang.sdc.com.au /sbin/amavisd[5141]: (05141-20)
idle_proc, bye: was busy, 567.4 ms, total idle 2920.332 s, busy 8.137 s
Aug 11 10:56:14.512 mustang.sdc.com.au /sbin/amavisd[5141]: (05141-20) load: 0
%, total idle 2920.332 s, busy 8.137 s
Aug 11 10:56:14.512 mustang.sdc.com.au /sbin/amavisd[5141]: (05141-20)
Net::Server: 2015/08/11-10:56:14 Server closing!

This would appear to be the reason for the earlier restarts.
Is this something new in amavisd?
I have been running amavisd for many years and have not seen this before +/-
Fedora 21.
