i'll offer a pseudo reply to my own question, for posterity's sake. after finding that dspam is no longer included in ubuntu's package repositories, and some research, i've decided to forgo using dspam at all. unfortunately, the consensus seems to be that the dspam project is arguably dead, for the time being.
