$protocol = ESMTP: Bug, docu bug or a layer 8 problem?

Hello,
after reading the comment
# $protocol = ... defaults to 'SMTP' or 'LMTP' (autodetect) on inet socket;
# must be configured explicitly for Unix sockets.
# Possible values: 'ESMTP', 'SMTP', 'LMTP', 'AM.PDP'
in amavisd.conf-default I decided to use 'protocol => "ESMTP"' for one
policy bank. But that results in crash:
amavis[9500]: () (!!)TROUBLE in process_request: unsupported protocol: ESMTP, TCP at /usr/sbin/amavisd-new line 11347.
amavis[9500]: () (!)Requesting process rundown after fatal error
postfix-baz/smtpd[9656]: warning: lost connection with proxy 127.…
postfix-baz/smtpd[9656]: proxy-reject: END-OF-MESSAGE: 451 4.3.0 Error: queue file write error; …
Hm, where is the problem? In the code, in the default config comments or
is just me?
Regards,
Pascal
