Is there a clamav/or primary av scanner timeout?

I have amavisd programmed for a primary (local) and secondary
(remote) clamav server.
If I kill the local one, I can watch the traffic hit the remote one
(tshark, remote logs, and mail logs show it)

but, if clamav hung on the primary (like it has done twice since
upgrading to 0.97.1), amavisd just seems to sit there till I totally
kill clamd with a sigsegv.

so, is there a timeout I can tweak?
what is the default? this didn't find anything interesting:

grep timeout /usr/local/etc/ama*

currently running amavisd-new-2.6.4_8,1 (amavisd new 2.6.4 with
freebsd patches from ports)
